ARTIST STATEMENT

Ian Horsfield creates his large abstract paintings first rapidly, scribbling the large forms, pushing and pulling them till they satisfy. Then methodically applying flat areas of acrylic paint again and again filling its spaces with shapes like cells. The resulting forms with their flat surfaces, and hard edges evoke post painterly abstraction, melded with the "all over" composition  of a Jackson Pollock.
    The  works curving organic forms and vibrating colour contrast are imbued with kinetic energy bringing life and movement to its forms. They dislocate the viewer from staid reality and immerses them in a petri dish of alien cell life, echoing both the seen and unseen patterns of nature. By disassociating  the viewer from day to day life they hopefully create contemplation and perhaps a sense of transcendence.
